Costumes I Want to Remake- Spring 2018

Hi everyone! I’m slowly finishing all the sewing projects I want to write posts about, so as a sewing post filler, I decided to talk about which costumes I made in the past and want to remake in the future.

Even though I want to remake every costume on this list, I will not work on them for at least the next two or more months. There is a lot of changes going on in my life right now which makes it harder for me to sew as much as I’d like to. (This is also the reason why I don’t talk about sewing as much as I want to. I don’t have the time to finishing anything.) So, this is a list of costumes I’d like to remake one day once my life settles down a bit. Continue reading “Costumes I Want to Remake- Spring 2018”

Snow White’s Mirror Mirror Dress~ Part 4

Well, this is the final post I have to make about this costume! (Took me long enough!) I’ll make links all the posts to a page dedicated to the progress in making this dress in the costume page. (I haven’t done it yet. Still working on organizing the page.)

Well, after completing the skirt and the bodice, I needed to attach the sleeves to the bodice. The first sleeves I attached to the bodice was the blue sleeves.

Here’s what they looked like pinned and waiting to be sewn onto the bodice…

Before I began to work on the orange sleeves, I had to sew the trim to the top of the bodice. I sewed two layers of lace, one higher than the other, and one band of pearls to the top of the highest layer of lace. It looked like this…

After that, I began to work on the orange sleeves. I used the McCall’s 6629 for the orange sleeves. I made the sleeves out of orange/red taffeta (It looks more orange than red). I also used the fabric to make the bow. (I like to call it “The Big, Orange Bow of Awesomeness”) I used longer sleeve pattern for view B to cut out the sleeve. After I cut the fabric out, I pinned and sewed the sleeve ribbon detail design. I used orange organdy ribbon for the detail mostly because I thought it looked pretty and was easier for me to use instead of making strips of fabric. (I’ve recently become more “lazy” when it comes to making a costume accurate. I usually blame this on my busy life and being tired from working.) Favorite McCall’s Costume Patterns for 2013

Last week, I walked into Hobby Lobby during their 99 cent McCall’s pattern sale without any intention to buy a pattern. Much to my surprise, I found several new costume patterns, but three in specific caught my eye. The first two are coats that have a very heavy Once Upon a Time costume influence while the other is heavily influenced by Merida’s dress from Brave.

Like other McCall’s and Simplicity patterns I’ve found over the years that are based off costumes from movies and TV shows, these patterns are not 100% accurate to the original costumes, but they should give the person using them a good head start and will take a lot of the stress of creating a pattern from scratch.

Before I talk about my favorite new McCall’s costume patterns for 2013, allow me to explain why I’m so excited about one of the patterns…

Back in August of 2012, I began to make Merida from Brave’s dress. I never did finish it, but I used a McCall’s costume pattern to make the dress. (I don’t remember the number of the pattern at this time) I ran into some problems making the dress fit, and assembling the costume in general, so I set it aside with the intention to go back to the costume and finish it after I learned more about sewing or a Merida-style pattern shows up on the market.

Anyway, back to the patterns…

Snow White’s Mirror Mirror Dress~ Part 3

Well, as you probably know by now, I had to stay home from the Phoenix Comicon because I felt sick. I was feeling very depressed about not going so I was trying to find something to get my mind off the Comicon. I had already started working on my Snow White, Mirror Mirror dress earlier in the week so I thought it would be the perfect thing to focus my thoughts on. I ended up making more progress on the whole entire costume than I ever had before. (See what happens when I miss a convention I was looking forward to for a year?!)

Earlier in the week, I had cut out all the pieces needed for the skirt and the the royal blue sleeves.

The sleeve pieces looked like this…006a

And the light blue over skirt looked like this…

Snow White’s Mirror Mirror Dress~ Part 2

I finished parts of the costume enough to make another post! I made the skirt of the costume before the bodice, but I decided to talk about the bodice before the skirt because how I made it is still fresh in my mind.

Here’s what the bodice I made looks like without the lining and boning sewn in…

001ab

The construction of the bodice is fairly straightforward. I used Simplicity’s #1728 for the bodice. I’ve already used this pattern to make another costume’s bodice so I knew how to work with it. I had lengthened the pattern because commercial patterns are generally shorter than my torso. Sometime it’s a little, sometimes it’s a lot. For this pattern, I lengthened it a few inches so the completed bodice will hit the top of my hips. It’s not the most drastic pattern lengthening I’ve done, but it was annoying. Fortunately, I used the same lengthened pattern for two other costume bodices so it was a necessary annoyance. Continue reading “Snow White’s Mirror Mirror Dress~ Part 2”

Snow White’s Mirror Mirror Dress~ Part 1

Before attending the Phoenix Comicon, I felt sad because I didn’t have a pretty, princess dress to wear there. I loved Snow White’s dress from the movie Mirror Mirror and I always thought about making one for myself one day. I do hear online that Mirror Mirror isn’t the best movie based off Snow White’s story, but I thought it was ok. And the costumes were amazing. After staring at fabric and calculating how much money I had on me, I decided it was time to start to sew myself the dress for myself.

This is the dress I’m talking about…
