A Talk About Red and White (And All Dark Colored and Light Colored) Quilt Color Schemes and Color Bleed
Hi everyone! I’m currently going through my old post ideas and I found one that I want to talk about: Dark and light colored quilt colored schemes. At the time I thought of the idea, I wanted to make flannel quilts. After thinking about the quilts and creating them, I ultimately decided to not to make the quilts. Even though I liked the patterns and the flannel fabric, I didn’t like the color schemes.
The major color scheme I wanted to work on is a red and white color scheme. I took a photograph of the fabric I wanted to use and used the photograph in a post. Here is what the fabric looked like…

Well, after I took the photograph and wrote the post, I decided to work on the quilt. This is when I realized something I always disliked about these types of quilts: They are a pain to wash!
What will happen is the red flannel will bleed and will turn the white flannel will turn pink. Anyone who knows why we separate our clothing by colors before washing, or has washed a red piece of clothing with all white clothing, knows about this problem. After doing research on red and white quilts, I read it was highly suggested to dry clean the quilt. I don’t have a dry cleaner closer to where I live nor do I feel ready for the commitment to create a quilt that will be higher maintenance.
So, I have scrapped the red and white quilt. I also scrapped a blue and white quilt I considered making as well. The thing is even though I scrapped these quilt ideas, I am open to making red and white as well as blue and white quilts in the future. It depends on the fabric though. Flannel is different than normal cotton I would use to make quilts out of. This is why I decided to move forward with my quilt ideas, except in quilting cotton. In my experience, I have less bleed and for less washes than for flannel. This is why I prefer cotton to flannel in these kinds of situations.
I won’t be working on them right now because I don’t want to purchase the fabric for either quilt right now. I also want to focus on making something out of the flannel before I make the quilts.
That’s all for now! Thank you for reading!
