Christmas Tree Farm Wood DIY Sign- Staining the Edge & Second Thoughts On the Stain Color
Hi everyone! Last year, I purchased a DIY Christmas Tree Farm wood sign from Michael’s Crafts. At that time, signs advertising Christmas trees meant something special to me. (And no, it doesn’t have to do with Taylor Swift’s song!) I saw the sign multiple times when I would shop at Michael’s. I really liked it more than other finished signs, so I decided to purchase it and decorate it myself.
Even though I started working on it last year, I finished it this year. I wanted to talk in blog posts about the process I went through to decorate the sign and the thoughts I had a long the way!
Originally, I didn’t take many photographs of the process I went through to decorate the sign. I also didn’t take photographs of what the sign looked like before I began to decorate it. What I decided to do is stain the edges and back of the sign with a wood stain. Then, I planned to paint the background dark green, the lettering in different shades of gold, and the trees in the sign a lighter green than the background. I also debated if I should paint the background a dark navy blue, but I decided to use it for a different sign I purchased at the same time I purchased this sign.
I purchased a wood stain at Walmart to stain the frame and back of the sign. I decided to use a stain in the color cherry. I believed the cherry stained wood would have a nice contrast to the dark green background. After staining the sign, the front looked like this…

And the back looked like this…

I decided to stain the sign before painting the front. I don’t regret this decision!
What I did feel concerned about is the color of the stain. Instead of being more red toned, it was berry. After using the stain, I started to wonder if I made a mistake using the shade of stain I did. It ended up turning out well in the end, but at the time I took the photographs I was upset. Today, I’m happy with the color. It isn’t want I originally imagined it looking like, but it turned out well in the end!
Well, that’s all for now! Another update about the progress of the sign will be later this week! Thank you for reading!
