New Spring 2022 Sewing Patterns for Prom Dresses- Simplicity and New Look

A few weeks ago, I wrote four posts about sewing patterns I think could make prom dresses. Since then, two of the big four sewing pattern companies released their Spring 2022 pattern collections. In these releases, there are new formal patterns as well as dress patterns that could work as prom dresses. Since there are so many dress and formal clothing patterns to pick from, I wanted to write new posts about these patterns. For this new series of posts, I’m starting with Simplicity patterns. Along with Simplicity, I will also talk about a New Look sewing pattern that is new for Spring 2022 and I think could work as a potential prom dress.

Simplicity S9473 & S9474

Simplicity describes pattern number S9473 as…

V-neck or jewel neckline dresses have flared skirt, optional three-quarter length sleeves and self belt. Backs have invisible zipper and back waist darts. Princess seam jacket has shaped hemlines and is fully lined.

V-neck or jewel neckline dresses have flared skirt, optional three-quarter length sleeves and self belt. Backs have invisible zipper and back waist darts. Princess seam jacket has shaped hemlines and is fully lined.

The dresses these patterns make are exactly the same dress and jacket designs, but S9473 comes in size ranges 6-14 and 16-24 while S9474 comes in size ranges 18W-24W and 26W-32W. This pattern would be great for a modest prom dress look, a dress that could be a prom dress and can be worn after prom, and/or someone looking for a plus sized pattern. This dress could also work as a great Easter dress or graduation dress.

Simplicity S9475 & S9476

Simplicity describes pattern number S9475 as…

Deep sweetheart neckline dresses have bust cup adjustment in two lengths with option for contrast overlay. This pattern features gathered waistband and gathered skirt, back variations for deep V-opening or closed back with waist darts.

And Simplicity describes pattern number S9476 as…

Sweetheart neckline dresses in two lengths have option for contrast overlay. All dresses have gathered waistband and gathered skirt and offer back variations for a deep V-neck opening or closed back with waist darts.

These patterns are just like S9473 and S9474. They are exactly the same dress design and are available in regular sizes (S9475) and plus sizes (S9476). These patterns could not only make a modest prom dress, but also Easter, graduation, and summer dress as well. This pattern could also be used to make a prom dress that could be worn to other events as well.

Simplicity S9465

Simplicity describes pattern number S9465 as…

This Vintage 1950’s dress has buttons that trim the triangular neckline and skirt with pleats on either side. View A has three-quarter sleeves, detachable collar and cuffs. View B has short sleeves and pointed cuffs.

This pattern comes in size ranges 6-14 and 16-24 and would be a great option for anyone looking for a vintage inspired dress from prom.

Simplicity S9464

Simplicity describes pattern number S9464 as…

This Vintage 1940’s dress has collarless neckline that can be made sweetheart or square shaped. View A has gathered skirt finished with a ruffle and self tie belt. View B features applied trim. Both views feature short sleeves pleated at the bottom.

This pattern’s design is super cute, but it may not be a good option for prom. Despite this, I wanted to include it in this post in case someone is looking for an unusual prom dress or a cottage core inspired prom dress.

Simplicity S9502

Simplicity describes pattern number S9502 as…

Costume gowns have lined bodices, empire waists, floor length skirts with back gathers and back zipper closures. Choose long and slim or short puffed sleeves with ribbon ruffles and rosettes. Open front coat in lace fabric has short puffed sleeves and detachable collar with boning and lace trim. Cropped jacket has sheer puffed sleeves, notched collar and button front. Sheer dickey has lace ruffles and drawstring ribbon closure.

This pattern comes in size ranges 10-18 and 20W-28W. It is a Regency inspired costume pattern that would be great for someone looking for a Regency inspired prom dress. It could also work for someone looking for a modern pattern to create a late 1990’s/early 2000’s empire waist prom dress.

New Look N6705

Simplicity’s website describes New Look pattern number N6705 as…

Misses’ empire waist dress is knee or calf length with low square neckline and has short puffed or long sleeves gathered to band.

This pattern comes in one size rage, 6-18. This pattern could make a late 1990’s- early 2000’s inspired empire waist dresses. The dresses this pattern makes could look less formal than dresses from other patterns, so it could be a better option for a spring/summer dress than prom.

That’s all now! Thank you for reading!
