The Navy and Yellow Scrap Quilt- The Basis Blocks and Why I’m Making Another Quilt

Hi everyone! Some time ago, I wrote a series of posts about how I made a navy and yellow log cabin quilt. After the quilt was finished, I had fabric left over. I’m trying to not throw away as much cotton fabric as possible, so I decided to make a scrap quilt using the leftover pieces of fabric.

This is what some of the basis blocks looked like at first…

And here is a closeup of some more…

All the fabric was cut into 2 1/2 strips, so I decided to sew the strips together in order to make the basis of the blocks. I didn’t have a pattern in mind, but I did try to match the yellow fabrics with the navy blue or darker fabrics. It sometimes didn’t work the way I planned (See the block in the upper right hand corner of the first photograph) but it did help in providing an even distribution of the colors.

Along with using any salvable fabrics left over from the first quilt, I was also able to use the navy plaid fabric I couldn’t use for the log cabin quilt. (I talked about swapping them for a different blue colored fabric in a post here.) I’m really happy I am able to still use the fabric for something instead of throwing it away!

Progress for the top quilt went pretty quickly because I had time to work on it and was focused enough to sew. (Sometimes I get really angry and frustrated with sewing, so I take breaks.) Next week, I’ll talk about what the larger, full sized blocks looked like.

That’s all for now! Thank you for reading!
