Sewing Ties to a Duvet Cover: Why It Didn’t Have Ties and How I Fixed It
Hi everyone! I decided to use a duvet instead of a comforter earlier this year. So far I like the duvet over a comforter. Not only can I change the thickness of the insert, I can use the same duvet cover for both inserts.
A while ago, I found a duvet cover on Amazon. It is a buffalo plaid cotton duvet cover and it was on sale for a good price. I decided to buy it.
When fall started, I decided to use my new plaid duvet cover. When I tried to put it on my duvet insert, I was shocked to find the cover didn’t have ties attached to the corners! Even though this explains the price, the listing didn’t mention anything about the lack of ties. I was upset, but I was more upset about the fact I didn’t notice it until long after the return window closed. So, I decided that, even though I’m stuck with the cover, I decided to sew ties to the corners.
This is what the corners of the cover looked like…

As you can see, there aren’t any ties attached to the corner. If you never used a duvet before, duvet covers normally have ties, usually made out of twill tape or something strong like it, attached to each corner of the cover. Duvet inserts have places to tie the ties to it. This step is important because it prevents the insert from shifting around while inside the cover.
As you can imagine, the discovery my duvet did not have ties made me really upset and angry. Since I was stuck with the duvet, I decided to figure out a way to add ties to the cover.
Inspired by the use of twill tape in my other covers, I decided to use twill tape to create the ties for my duvet cover…

You probably are wondering why there is so much twill tape. I needed to buy a lot of twill tape for pajama bottom ties. Since I needed more twill tape to make the ties, I bought more than I thought I would need for the pajamas. Before anyone asks, I am making more than one pajama bottom. Thus why there was so much twill tape!
Duvet covers have two ties per corner. This way they can tie to the insert easier. So, I cut eight ties, two for each corner of the cover…

I don’t remember the exact length I cut the ties, but they are around 7 to 11 inches long.
After I cut them, I sewed them together on one side…

I sewed them together in the style of a french seam. The twill tape I used frays easily, so this was the best way to prevent them from fraying.
After this was done, I folded over one of loose ends on top of itself and sewed it down. I repeated this on the other side. I repeated all the steps on the other three pairs of twill tape.
Once I finished, I sewed the joined ends of the ties to the corners of the duvet cover…

And then I was finished!

This is what the corner looks like with the twill tape ties sewn onto it…

I did this over a month ago and the ties have lasted really well. I don’t have any complaints about how they are working. I’m really happy I was able to fix this duvet cover! Other than the missing ties, I have no complaints about how well this cover works.
That’s all for now! Thank you for reading!
