The Navy and Yellow Log Cabin Quilt- Changing One of The Fabrics and How It Looks Now
Hi everyone! It’s been a month or so since I published a post about the navy and yellow log cabin quilt. Between the last post I made and this post, I haven’t been able to finish the turquoise and grey log cabin quilt. Even though the turquoise and grey quilt is not done, the navy and yellow quilt is!
In this post, I wanted to talk about my decision to change one of the navy fabrics in my quilt and how it turned out.
EDIT: I used two different watermarks in these photographs. One is for this blog, essieofwho.com, while the other one has the watermark I use for my second blog, theestellainitiative.com. Since I published this post with both blog watermarks, I decided to keep the improperly watermarked photographs as is. I’m sorry for any confusion this may have caused!
First, I wanted to talk about the fabric itself. The fabric I decided to change is the navy and white plaid fabric. It is the second one on the right in this photograph…

The reason why I decided to change the fabric is because I didn’t purchase enough of it to make all the blocks. My closest Walmart didn’t have the fabric design for sale anymore. I considered buying similar fabric and using it as an alternative, but Walmart didn’t have it for sale. Also, I couldn’t travel anywhere at that time due to vehicle problems. So, I was limited to the fabric my closet Walmart had or anything I could find online.
Since I was limited, I decided to take as many scraps of the fabric, sew them together to make a strip long enough to continue making the quilt, and then continue to make the quilt.
Here some of the scraps…

And this is me sewing them together…

And this is what the fabric strips looked like in the block…

To be honest, I hated it. I know the quilt isn’t perfect and I knew this before I started making the quilt, but the miss aligned stripes? Nope. I couldn’t do it. So, I decided to do something I didn’t want to do: Buy new fabric and redo the section of the quilt blocks.
After looking around Walmart, I found some blue fabric that I thought might work well with all the colors in the quilt…

This is what the color difference between the two fabrics…

And this is what the new fabric looks like next to the old fabric and the fabric for the middle square…

And finally, here is what the new fabric looks like along side the other fabric in the log cabin quilt…

I was worried about the way the new fabric looked like with the rest of the quilt fabric. I think it looks good with the other shades of blue. I don’t know if everyone will agree with me, but I was in a bind.
After cutting the fabric into the right length and width, I sewed them into the quilt blocks. This is what it looked like after I replaced the navy plaid with the blue…

I liked the way everything looked, so I continued to sew the blocks. I’ll show what the finished blocks look like in a future post.
That’s all for now! Thank you for reading!
